It isn't about being relevant, but being holy.

...but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”—Peter. (1 Peter 1.15-16)

It isn't about being relevant, but being holy.

I see a trend today in churches.  Soul patches, ripped jeans, iPhones, t-shirts, tattoos, AJAX, Facebook and Twitter.  These are all things that I have seen in the pulpit and in the pews.  The desire to be culturally relevant is good.  Paul even wanted to be be "all things to all people" [1 Cor 9:22] so that a few might be saved.  In fact, I would say that being relevant is needed.  More importantly is the call to be holy.

Child molestation, drug abuse, sex scandals, fiscal abuse, mis-representation.  I see these things too.  The media is mostly to blame, skewing the truth so that it seems that every priest or preacher is raging addict of some kind.  Not true.  It doesn't change the perception though, does it?  All the more reason for us to be holy.

How is the world going to see that following Jesus is any different than following any other personality or world view?
